John Philipsborn

John Philipsborn is a criminal law specialist who has tried numerous cases in State and Federal courts, including a number of capital cases, many of them involving complex scientific and/or mental health evidence. He continues providing training to members of the bar as well as to forensic mental health professionals around California and elsewhere. Mr. Philipsborn spent four years as a public defender, and has been in private practice for more than 40 years. In addition to a law degree, he has a Masters degree in education and a Masters degree in criminology, law, and society. Mr. Philipsborn continues to be involved in graduate study related to science and law. Mr. Philipsborn has been a co-author of 3 chapters of CEB's Criminal Law, Procedure, and Practice, though he now updates only the mental health chapter of the book. He has authored more than 100 articles and book chapters and continues to co-author manuals used by lawyers involved in capital cases.
