Karl W. Krooth
Managing Partner
Karl Krooth practices at the crossroads of criminal law and immigration law. His sophistication in developing strategies to mitigate immigration consequences for foreign nationals has led many criminal defense attorneys and immigration attorneys, in the public and private sectors, to seek his advice in furtherance of mitigating immigration consequences to make counteroffers and otherwise develop leverage. Practical guidance from Mr. Krooth may well be the key at every phase of a case to weigh availability of alternative dispositions. Foreign nationals who have already suffered criminal charges and/or counts of conviction may benefit from his advice, as he also conducts post-conviction relief before California courts and sometimes federal district courts. Additionally, Mr. Krooth works on appeals from post-conviction relief matters on which appellate bodies rule. His representation extends to conducting matters before immigration agencies and courts. Mr. Krooth began his career by developing practical experience in all phases of the criminal justice system. After gaining experience on a variety of prosecutions in both felony and misdemeanor matters, he transitioned to represent the disenfranchised in criminal defense and immigration matters. In this realm, Mr. Krooth built alliances with attorneys in organizations that had a political orientation. Among these attorneys, some of whom ended up as colleagues collaborating in work together, Julian Sanchez Mora stands out - Julian has earned his role as a law partner of Karl at Immigrant Crime and Justice in its current incarnation as a LLP. "Mr. Krooth is the primary author of the 2023 national edition of the annually-updated article on the intersection of criminal and immigration law (CrimImm) that the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) publishes. He has had the opportunity to co-author a section on the threshold for effective assistance of counsel in the treatise on Immigration law and procedure (Gordon, Mailman, Yale-Loehr & Wada). Mr. Krooth has authored and co-authored articles in Benders Immigration Bulletin. Mr. Krooth recently accepted his second of two consecutive stints as a volunteer on the Planning Committee for the Annual Conference, which happens in June of each year. He usually received and accepted invitations to speak at the Annual Conference, so being on the Conference Committee is recognition of being among the best and brightest in the field. Mr. Krooth has also participated on Committees organizing the 2023 AILA Mid-Winter Conference and the 2022 AILA Crimes Conference, as well as spoken at these Conferences, at other state-level AILA conferences and at local AILA continuing legal education panels. Additionally, he accepted speaking invitations from the International section of the State Bar of California; CEB (California); California Federation of Interpreters; American College of Forensic Psychology; Immigration Daily; the Bar Association of San Francisco; Advanced Special Immigrant Survivors Technical Assistance; and Californians for a Responsible Budget. Mr. Krooth historically served separate stints of two years each as the Immigration Committee Chair of the Bay Area Chapter at National Lawyers Guild (NLG), and on the NLG Board."
