Could Large Language Models Audit and Optimize California’s Ever-Growing Body of Law?
May 8, 2026

Administrative Law, State & Local Government
California's legal landscape mirrors that of America at large, in that it's grown to be vast in scope and often dense in nature. Practicing lawyers and those working in the regulatory and policy spaces are hyper-specialized to grasp the contours of their particular subject matter areas. Despite paradigm-shifting technological advances in our digital age that theoretically democratize access to information, the barriers to navigating the law remain high, and continue to undergird high fees for legal experts and concerns about who has access to legal remedies.

E-books from libraries can be accessed by readers, but most borrowers probably don’t know much about the details behind the sometimes lengthy waits for a popular new title. Those waits usually have to do with the access method a library is using -- and the legal terms around how and to how many people they can lend, and at what cost.
Does the Dormant Commerce Clause Apply to the California Cannabis Market?

Cannabis, Constitutional Law
In June 2025, a panel of the Ninth Circuit heard oral arguments on whether the dormant Commerce Clause should apply to federally illegal cannabis markets, such as California’s. The case tees up a potential split in circuit authority on a thorny constitutional question that could upend state-level legal cannabis markets in California and across the country.

Litigation Practice & Procedure, Venue, Injunctions & Preliminary Remedies
When the federal judiciary was established, one apparent goal was to insulate the dispute resolution branch of government from the political pressure exerted by voters. Article III judges are not elected, and they serve lifetime terms, being removable only via the impeachment process. And this seems generally to have gone according to plan. The Supreme Court, being the highest court in the country, establishes influential law, and its makeup and decisions often come under significant political and public scrutiny -- but, even that is ultimately aimed at the President or Congress who are tasked with filling and organizing the high court. The business of the rest of the judiciary is not typically at the top of our newsfeeds. Yet.

Asylum and withholding of removal are two grounds on which an immigrant who is removable from the United States may be granted relief from a looming deportation. One means of establishing eligibility for both of these claims is making a showing in immigration court of a fear of persecution in the country of origin based on “membership in a particular social group.” (See
