Edward Thomas Dunn, Jr.

Edward Thomas Dunn is an accomplished attorney with four decades of experience in criminal and appellate law. He is one of only a few attorneys who have been certified as a specialist in both areas. Remarkably, Mr. Dunn won his first appellate case in the United States Supreme Court. He advises other practitioners, counties, and police departments throughout California about legal ethics, trial and habeas tactics, federal search and seizure, right to counsel, and Miranda-related issues. Mr. Dunn has been employed as a consultant and expert witness for the State Bar of California to deal with habeas corpus issues. His experience includes hundreds of state and federal civil and criminal writs and appeals over the past 40 years, including successful petitions and applications in the United States Supreme Court, the appellate courts of California, and appellate work as pro hac vice counsel in the States of New York and Oregon.

Before opening his own criminal and appellate practice in 2004, Mr. Dunn served as a Senior Attorney for the California Court of Appeal; a Senior Deputy District Attorney for the County of Orange; a Deputy Attorney General for the State of California; an associate with Manning & Kass, Ellrod, Ramirez, Trester LLP; an Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager of Downey Savings and Loan Association; and a member of the House of Representatives Committee on Rules staff. He taught at four Southern California law schools for 21 years and currently teaches at Franklin University and Indiana Wesleyan University in the fields of Public Administration and Criminal Justice. Mr. Dunn earned his BA degree from Biola University in the History Honors program, an M.P.A. from Indiana Wesleyan University, and his J.D. degree from Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles.

Mr. Dunn has been named to the list of Top Attorneys in California by Los Angeles Magazine and Orange Coast Magazine, as well as selected as a “Southern California Super Lawyer” for skills demonstrated in the field of Appellate Law. He has been listed in America’s Top 100 Criminal Defense Attorneys and rated "10 out of 10" by AVVO. Since 1994, Mr. Dunn has authored several chapters in three major CEB publications, including California Criminal Law Procedure and Practice and Scientific Evidence and Expert Testimony in California. He also served as the first Chair of the nascent Public Safety Board and Vice Chair of the Charter Review Committee for the City of Anaheim, California.
