MICHAEL S. OGUL
Michael S. Ogul, Office of the Public Defender, San Jose, has been a public defender for 28 years, having previously worked in San Joaquin, Alameda and Solano counties. He has litigated numerous capital cases, published many articles on various aspects of capital and criminal defense, taught seminars on capital defense and other criminal defense topics, and presently serves as the editor of the California Death Penalty Defense Manual.
WILLIAM J. WOODS
William J. Woods recently retired as Assistant Head Deputy District Attorney for Los Angeles County. During his time in the LADA Appellate Division, he was the counsel of record on 14 published opinions, including two in the California Supreme Court. His writings include articles for both the California District Attorney Association and the California State Bar Journal on bail, ethics, Wheeler/Batson and the Public Records Act. He is the current author of Chapter 2, Professional Responsibility, in CEB’s California Criminal Law Procedure and Practice (2017). William served on the California State Bar Standing Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct and was a longtime member of LADA’s Professional Responsibility Committee, serving as the chair for several years. Most recently he served as the Assistant Head Deputy in the Training Division of LADA providing instruction for both new and veteran prosecutors. Prior to attending Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles, he was a high school history teacher for ten years.
