RESPONSIBILITIES: Under supervision, the Senior Legal Editor I position is responsible for independently conducting legal research and analysis; editing, writing, and ensuring the technical accuracy of the content of publications and manuscripts.

Under general direction, the Legal Editor II position is responsible for rewriting and reorganizing complex manuscripts in addition to editing for style, organization, content, and emphasis. Incumbents apply knowledge of the law specialty to evaluate manuscripts for value of content, validity of conclusions, rational development of content, and appropriate emphasis.

REQUIREMENTS: Position requires excellent oral and written communication skills; strong analytical, editorial and electronic legal research skills; interpersonal, organizational, & time-mgmt skills essential; ability to work independently; proficiency in PC applications. J.D. required.

In addition, note the following:

  • For Senior Legal Editor I level: Research abilities in areas of estate planning and/or tax, or willingness to be trained in these research areas.
  • For Legal Editor II level: Demonstrated subject-matter expertise in estate planning and/or taxation of trusts and estates.

DESIRABLE: Estate planning law knowledge, tax research experience, and/or practice experience in estate planning or tax is desirable. Publishing experience.

The legal editor also tracks legal developments, performs legal research and applies his/her knowledge of the law specialty to evaluate manuscripts for value and rational development of content, validity of conclusions, and appropriate emphasis.

REQUIREMENTS: Position requires substantive knowledge of criminal law and evidence; strong writing, editorial and electronic legal research skills; interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills; ability to work independently; proficiency in electronic applications. DESIRABLE: Criminal law practice experience; active CA State Bar membership; publishing experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide technical leadership to the development of the new publishing system, as well as architect technical solutions for achieving greater efficiencies among research staff, editors, and composers, and providing more flexibility in the reuse and repurpose of legal information; design, develop, test, and deploy codes to allow for the integration of purchased software; and troubleshoot and support production staff using existing publishing system tools.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor`s degree in Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 8 years experience in Information Technology as a programmer with two years experience in a technical lead role.
  • Proficiency with the technologies:
    • Operating Systems: Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista
    • XML: XML/XSL/XSLT, DTD, Schema
    • Programming Languages and Development Tools: Java; JavaScript
  • Strong analytical, communication, and team skills.
  • Ability to document complex systems and procedures.
  • Ability to translate CEB`s business needs into computer applications.
  • Ability to work with technical staff as well as business users.
  • Familiarity with Software Development Life Cycle.
  • Ability to schedule and work on multiple projects at the same time.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a development team.
  • Ability to research and evaluate vendor software.
  • Experience with Object Oriented Programming.
  • Experience with version control systems.
  • Experience with bug tracking systems.

DESIRABLE:

  • Familiarity with Content Management System and XML Editors.
  • Knowledge of CEB`s products and operations, especially product development cycles.
  • Web application programming.
  • Experience with text conversion and manipulation.
