WINNER ANNOUNCED FOR U.C. IRVINE SCHOOL OF LAW
ANNUAL CEB LEGAL RESEARCH & WRITING AWARD
Continuing Education of the Bar California (CEB) presented its annual Award for Excellence in Legal Research and Writing to Gregory Mintz, Class of 2012, the University of California, Irvine, School of Law, on February 15. He received a certificate and a $2,500 cash prize.
The award is granted to the best brief produced in the school's first-year research and writing program and acknowledges Mintz's outstanding research and writing skills, as demonstrated in the summary judgment brief he wrote in his Lawyering Skills class. Mintz's brief won for clear thinking, insightful legal analysis, and persuasiveness. Mintz said the class was “well-designed to integrate practical skills with an exposure to new substantive legal issues” and that he enjoyed the course's focus on “creating concrete products.”
CEB created the award to acknowledge the crucial role that research and writing skills play in the practice of law. Instructors select the top briefs, which are then reviewed by CEB's selection committee. The selection committee included Justice Sheila Prell Sonenshine (Ret.), Sonenshine Enterprises, Laguna Beach; Mark P. Robinson, Jr., Robinson, Calcagnie & Robinson, Newport Beach; and Karla Kraft, Hodel Briggs Winter LLP, Irvine. They evaluated the briefs for thorough research, clear analysis, persuasive writing, and other essential skills.
When the U.C. Irvine School of Law opened to students in Fall of 2009, it was the first public law school to open in the state in 40 years. Mintz described attending a newly-formed law school as a “great experience” due to the ”energy and enthusiasm that surround even everyday events.”
